In Wagerweb hockey news, the Philadelphia Flyers shuffled their front office around on May 7 by naming Ron Hextall as the NHL club’s new general manager. Hextall was promoted to the position after former GM Paul Holmgren was named the team’s president. Hextall was a Flyers goaltender for 11 seasons during his 13-year career and returned to the club after retiring in 1999 when he was hired as a scout. However, he left the City of Brotherly Love and headed to the west coast several years later to become the assistant GM of the Los Angeles Kings.

After seven years in Los Angeles, Hextall made his way back to Philadelphia just last summer when he signed on as Holmgren’s assistant and the club’s director of hockey operations. Hextall said it was always his dream to become the GM of the Flyers and he jumped at the chance when chairman Ed Snider offered him the job. He added that the team’s fans want and deserve another Stanley Cup and he’s going to work as hard as possible to deliver one.

Even though the final say on hockey matters will fall on Hextall, he said he’d be stupid if he didn’t speak with Holmgren first to get his input and opinions. Hextall remarked that he’ll seek out Holmgren to bounce ideas off of him before making and drastic changes or decisions. Holmgren said he knew Hextall was ready to take over his former position and he approached Snider in January about making the front office moves.

Holmgren stated that Hextall’s a very smart guy and the organization will be strengthened with him in the GM’s chair. As for Holmgren’s new duties, he’ll now be looking after the club’s hockey and business operations. The president’s position was last filled by Peter Luukko, but he resigned from the organization in December of 2013.

Holmgren took over the GM’s job in October of 2006 when he replaced former Flyer legend and teammate Bob Clarke. The Flyers finished dead last in the 30-team league in the 2006/07 season, but made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Final the next year. Holmgren’s teams made the playoffs six times during his seven full seasons in charge and reached the Stanley Cup Final in the 2009/10 campaign.

Snider said he’s happy with the job Holmgren has done with the team and that’s why he didn’t really need to think twice about promoting him to president. He added that he’s confident Hextall will do a fine job in his new role. While with the Kings, Hextall was the assistant to GM Dean Lombardi and he helped put together the squad that won the Stanley Cup in 2011/12. Snider realizes that Hextall has gained a lot of experience over the years working with Lombardi and Holmgren and he knows how to build a team and develop players.

Hextall stated he’d like to build the Flyers through the draft as he likes to have a team with a lot of youth, but didn’t rule out making trades to strengthen the team.
