Wagerweb Heavyweight Boxing – Stiverne and Arreola Set to Fight!

Heavyweights Bermaine Stiverne of Haiti and Chris Arreola of Los Angeles are set to square off in their much-anticipated rematch this Saturday, May 10. The 12-round bout will be taking place at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles and can be seen live across the U.S. on ESPN. Their first meeting in April of 2013 was an action-packed slugfest with Stiverne, who now fights out of Las Vegas, winning it by a unanimous 12-round decision.

The year-old Stiverne will climb through the ring ropes with a record of 23-1-1 along with 20 Kos while the 33-year-old Arreola enters the bout with a mark of 36-3-1 with 31 Kos to his name. There’s much more than simple bragging rights on the line in the fight since it’s also for the vacant WBC World Heavyweight Title. In addition, if Arreola manages to win the crown he’ll become just the first Mexican-American heavyweight to become a world champion and if Stiverne takes the fight he’ll be the first Haitian heavyweight titleholder in boxing history.

Both boxers said they’re looking forward to making history on Saturday night and are in the best shape of their careers. Stiverne claims he was promised a bout with Vitali Klitschko after defeating Arreola last year, but it never materialized. He hasn’t been back in the ring since then and could be a little rusty. He said he’s not really worried about that now and his goal is to fight for the title no matter who he has to face.

In the past, Stiverne has struggled somewhat when he has been expected to make a name for himself. Back in 2007 he was stopped in the fourth round by Demetrice King in a fight he was expected to win, but that’s the only black mark on his career so far. However, he also had a hard time against Charles Davis two years later and was held to a draw. He wasn’t at his best against Willie Herring in 2012 either, but managed to win by decision.

It appears Stiverne doesn’t fare too well when he’s the favourite going into his bouts. He’s the favourite again this time since having his way with Arreola last year. Bet 365 has him listed at -136 with Arreola at +110. He says he’s ready for whatever Arreola brings to the ring, but he’s certainly not taking him lightly or looking past him. He’s expecting Arreola to be in top shape and believes the fight will be better than their first one. He added that he knows what his opponent can and can’t do in the ring and believes his skills and power will be too much for him.

Arreola says his career’s on the line in this fight and he can’t afford another loss. He’s says he’s matured as a boxer and realizes he has to work as hard as he can in training because he has no other choice. He hasn’t always been in the best of shape in the past and he’s paid for it with his three losses. He claims he’s learned his lesson and things will be different this time.

Arreola admits it was his own fault he lost to Stiverne last year, but his motivation is to avenge it and to win the heavyweight crown. He admits that Stiverne was the better man that night, but things will be different this weekend since he’s now a desperate fighter with his back against the wall and he simply can’t afford to lose this do or die bout.
